- Fusing and Forming – Quick and Easy:
3 Sessions, 3 hours ea. Cost: $135.00 includes rental of tools, and fusing fees for class projects. Students will need to purchase glass from the studio for their projects. No glass purchased outside of the studio is allowed in our fusing classes. Glass fusing is an exciting and liberating glass art which enables artists to create glass designs by fusing compatible glass pieces together in a kiln. In this class students will have the opportunity to make a variety of projects, and work with a wide variety of fusing materials and techniques. In addition we will examine various finished projects and discuss how they were made. Students will learn basic glass cutting and shaping skills; cleaning and layering techniques, and some basic kiln programming. Previous glass fusing experience is not required. (Students may only take this class once.)
Once students have mastered the basics in Fusing and Forming–Quick and Easy they may choose to attend our Thursday evening Open Fusing Studio Time ($5.00/hour) available every Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 PM. Kiln Formed Glass – Beyond the Basics of Fusing and Forming
An Advanced Class for those who want to take their fusing skills and knowledge to the next level. This class will meet once a month (January – June; September – October) and provide students with the ability to go from being a crafter to being an artist. Cost is $100.00 per class session or $800.00 for all 8 sessions, which includes 3 hours of studio time each week and the firing fee for class project only. Student purchasing all 8 sessions by January 28th class will receive 25% off the class cost ($600.00) Additional projects may be fired for an additional fee. Students may also choose to only attend the class session each month with no studio time and no kiln time. Cost is $50/class. Discount does not apply. Students must have taken the Fusing and Forming: Quick and Easy class. All Students must have their own hand tools and supplies. Glass and fusing supplies for this class must be purchased through Suevel Studios.
Session 1, Thursday, January 26th
Reviewing the Basics: Cost: $50 if only attending the class session; $100 if attending the class session and studio time between class sessions. Additional costs include supplies for project, tools and fusing fees for additional projects.
In this first session of our advanced fusing class, students will have a chance to review the important basics of creating a great piece of fused glass art. We’ll discuss how the kiln works, what is happening inside the kiln, the best ways to clean your piece before and after firing, the importance of keeping a log book, and other critical elements to fusing success. Students will have the opportunity to create a fused glass wall art piece that demonstrates the differences in kiln schedules. This is an important piece for both the novice as well as the experienced fuser as it allows the artist to achieve the exact texture and dimension they are looking to create.
Session 2, February 23rd
Playing with Stringer: Cost: $50 for just the class session; $100 includes class and studio time between sessions. Additional Costs include: supplies for class project; tools and firing of additional projects.
In this second session of our advanced fusing class we will be experimenting with stringer and noodles. Glass stringers and noodles can be shaped and slumped to create interesting patterns and elements to your final fused glass piece. We will be exploring how to do that as well as pulling our own stringer using a vitrigraph kiln and torch. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for additional studio time to come in and use the torch and vitrigraph to create their own custom colors for their projects.
Session 3, March 30th
Playing with Frit – Cost: $50 for class only; $100 for class plus studio time between sessions. Additional costs include materials for projects, tools and firing time of additional projects.
In this session, students will have the opportunity to explore the various ways to use frit in your project. Frit is glass in powdered and granulated form and can be used to create shadowing, texture, individual elements, etc. We’ll take a look at all of these ways to use frit and then students will have the chance to pick one method and create a one-of-a-kind piece of custom glass art.
Session 4, April 27th
Playing with Glass Strips: Cost: $50 for just the class session; $100 for class session plus studio time between classes. Additional cost include supplies for project, tools and firing fees for additional projects.
Learn the basics of using strips of glass to create interesting and different pieces of fused glass art. Students will have the opportunity to explore how glass strips can be used in a variety of methods to create a lattice effect, as a dam for frit when working thick, or stacked on end to create a beautiful work of art.
Session 5: May 25th
Creating Pattern Bars Cost: $50 for just the class session; $100 for class session plus studio time between classes. Additional costs include supplies for project, tools, and firing fees for additional projects.
In this class students will have the opportunity to create an 8 x 8 pattern bar slab that can be cut up into smaller pieces for use in a larger project. Pattern bars allow the glass artist to create interesting designs that repeat and enhance the overall impact of the final piece. From the simple to the complex, pattern bars open up a whole new world of design composition that moves the student from hobbyist to artist.
Session 6: June 29th
Creating Glass Art from Fused Glass Elements Cost: $50 for class session only; $100 for class session, studio time between classes and firing of class project. Additional costs include supplies for project, tools and firing fees for additional projects.
In this session we will be learning how to incorporate the elements we have been creating since January into finished pieces. Students will learn how to design with fused elements, some cold-working skills, damming set-ups and firing schedules for working thick; tile saw, drill press, etc.
Students should plan to bring all the elements they have created to class so that the design process can be discussed for their finished piece.
Summer Break – July through August – Students enrolled in the Advanced Class should spend time over the summer planning, designing and creating. Studio time is available upon request. Cost is $5.00/hour and students need to have their own hand tools and supplies.
Session 7: September 28th
Playing with Paint Cost: $50 for class session only; $100 for class session, studio time between classes and firing of class project. Additional costs include supplies for project, tools, and any additional project firings. Students wishing to experiment with the painting technique will need to purchase their own paints and brushes.
Using paint on glass is an ancient art form that has been used in stained glass for centuries. Fused glass artists have incorporated the techniques in a variety of ways to enhance their art work. In this class students will have the chance to work with some paints on a sample piece. Students wishing to do a larger piece or with additional paint products will need to purchase a painting kit.
Session 8: October 26th
Creating with Scrap Cost: $50 for class session only; $100 for class session, studio time between classes, firing of class project. Additional costs include supplies for project, tools and firing fees for additional projects.
In this final class of the Advanced Fusing class we will take a look at all the ways a glass artist can make use of the scrap glass that accumulates in your studio. Bring your scrap and lets play!
Students need to have taken the four week Fusing and Forming class in order to take the Advanced Class. Students wishing to take the Advanced Class who have not taken our Beginning level class will need Instructor permission to attend. You may take all 8 sessions of this class or sign up for individual sessions (*discount only applies if all 8 sessions are purchased in January). Students who miss a class session may work with the instructor to schedule a make-up session.
